I love the story about Isabel Allende: people tend to casually say they're going to 'be a writer' when they retire, when they find the time, like it's something you can just decide to do and hey presto! A story. I'm fascinated by ideas about the past and I love exploring them in writing. An idea that I flirt with occasionally is the rejection of time as linear. Other societies don't understand and make sense of time in the way we do, and I intend to experiment with other cultures' constructs of time in fiction. When I get the time, of course! There's a funny story about Isabel Allende, who was told by a dentist that he wanted to write a book once he'd retired, so she replied: "When I retire, I plan to start pulling teeth."
