Thanks Caroline(s!!) for your comments!
Yes, C. Rance, thinking I'll get a discounted bottle of champaign and pop a cork, but need to actually have a pile of freshly minted books on the table for a real launch...Waiting for those author's copies! Glad you liked Joe's story. Glad the blog could help me share it with you and others.
And to C. Bailey. Don't really feel like Joe's kind still exist, but hope I'm wrong. We of the baby-boomer generation are maybe too caugh up in our own modern-society fears (of keeping up w/housing costs/healthcare/food & gas etc.) to be that generous. Maybe it's some unencumbered young people these days who give off Joe's individual free-wheeling thinking, like those treesitting kids who lately tried to save a few first-growth redwoods from being cut down on university property in Berkeley . After two years up there they were forced off their perches, arrested and heavily fined, with trees quickly cut down for new buildings. But like Joe, their ideals still linger on.
And yes. I do feel very fortunate that my used-car filmmaking book has connected with filmmakers who initially believed that making a major filmwork was impossible. Nowadays, I'm hoping some young computer genius is sitting in his/her room concocting a digital feature on their laptop, creating something good enough and original enough to shock us all! At any rate, kind of sweet that it was Vin's mother who gave him a copy of my book :>)

Hi Rick, I really enjoyed your story, what an awesome & generous little old man! I wonder if these people still exist today. When I saw the quote from Vin Diesel about your book FEATURE FILMMAKING AT USED-CAR PRICES, I ended up looking at Vin’s complete biography in Wiki, which was very interesting and an example of perseverance – it must be great to know that your book has had such an influence in an artist’s life and I am sure many others too. Looking forward to BLACK PRESIDENT being in the shops!
